She Was Bullied For Her Burns, But Was Comforted By Photo Of Nurse Cradling Her – Then 38 Years Later They Reunite!
Back in 1977, Amanda Scarpinati was 3 months old, when she fell from the sofa into a hot-steam humidifier and was left with third-degree burns. While a kind nurse helped Amanda heal, she still had to endure a series of operations and was bullied for her appearance. Yet through it all, she found solace in that 1977 photo of the nurse cradling her back to health.
“Growing up as a child, disfigured by the burns, I was bullied and picked on, tormented,” Amanda told the AP. “‘I’d look at those pictures and talk to her, even though I didn’t know who she was. I took comfort looking at this woman who seemed so sincere caring for me.”
For the next two decades, Amanda searched for that compassionate nurse, but didn’t have any luck. Then she reached out on social media in one last attempt and found her colleague! After 38 years, Amanda and the nurse, Susan Berger, reunited. “I don’t know how many nurses would be lucky enough to have something like this happen, to have someone remember you all that time,” Susan said. “I feel privileged to be the one to represent all the nurses who cared for Amanda over the years.”
