The unthinkable happened to a mother in Brazil pregnant with twins. But luckily, doctors were able to save her babies. Frankielen da Silva Zampoli Padilha died of a stroke while she was nine weeks pregnant. However, doctors noticed that the embryos inside her still had beating hearts. Miraculously, while Frankielen remained brain dead, her body kept her babies alive.

“We did an ultrasound on the embryos thinking they would be failing in the womb, but to our surprise they were clinging to life,” her physician, Dr. Dalton Rivabem told Caters TV. “Frankielen’s organs were all intact and working as if she was still with us. We took the decision to keep her alive to save her unborn children, and every day we watched them grow normally.”

At 123 days, the twins (one boy and one girl) were delivered via C-section. The mother’s life support was turned off, and she was given a proper burial. The twins now live with their father and grandmother.
