Man Born with an ‘Upside-Down’ Head Thrives Thanks to Compassionate Mom
Claudio Vieira de Oliveira was born with arthrogryposis, a rare condition that contorted his spine and limbs so severely that it essentially gave him an “upside-down” head. While he literally sees the world differently than everyone else, his perspective on life is so uplifting and inspirational.
Some abled-bodied people might be taken aback by Claudio’s appearance, as “his head rests backwards on his spine and his limbs are twisted underneath him,” yet his smile and his laugh conquer all negativity. Initially, doctors had advised Claudio’s mom to end his life, but she refused to let her little boy die.
Instead, she took Claudio home where she created a loving and nurturing environment for him to persevere – and vowed never to return to the doctor. Impressively, Claudio reportedly learned to walk on his knees and uses a pen with his mouth and his lips to operate a cell phone. “I have never contemplated giving up,” he said. Now 37 years old, Claudio has flourished as an accountant, a celebrated public speaker and a published writer.
